Global challenges

The world economic system is experiencing enormous challenges. Literature points to the interdependence of the geopolitical processes and economic systems in determining the results of global governance. The article by Hurrell (2024) highlights that geopolitics is associated with competition and the breakdown of consensus on economic liberalism, which has been put on the institutions of global economic governance. According to the article, the re-emergence of geopolitics makes the collaboration of economic policies more difficult due to the prioritisation of power struggles, nationalism, and domestic backlash politics (Hurrell, 2024, p. 230). This view accentuates that geopolitical factors are the primary determinants of foreign economic policies and the effectiveness of institutional frameworks The article also highlights how power politics have played a significant part in the routine functioning of the global economy. Stavytskyy and Dligach (2025, p.4) also observe that structural economic factors like regionalisation and automation have impeded efforts to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Geopolitical tensions and economic fragmentation are two interconnected barriers that curtail global cooperation and inequality among income groups. For instance, Stavytskyy and Dligach (2025, p.5) observe that geopolitical risks make energy prices more volatile, affecting SDG 7 and SDG 13. The remedies to the existing world economic issues have to go beyond the nationalism of divided countries to the communion in geo-economic reformation, as pointed out by Hurrell (2024, p. 232). He sees the development of a world governance system, which recognizes the distribution of power and establishes multilateral institutions for the management of competition, conflict reduction, and trust recovery, as a necessity. Stavytskyy and Dligach (2025, p. 18) further mention the need for global economic model reforms like sustainable trade policy, inclusive technological transition and renewed investment in development-based cooperation to reduce SDG barriers.
